GROSSERIES

     2017

This photographic installation was developed over several visits to grocers across London. Using a 35mm lens, the project focused on capturing both appealing and unappealing food items, with the aim of framing them in a way that provokes discomfort. The exclusive use of this lens enabled close-up shots that emphasized distortions and blurs, enhancing the unsettling visual impact.

The photographs are displayed within plastic packaging—a deliberate material choice reflecting the food industry's reliance on and overuse of plastic. During the process of shooting in these environments, a noticeable contrast emerged: customers appeared at ease when handling neatly packaged goods, yet visibly unsettled when watching butchers prepare their orders. This contrast informed the installation’s exploration of perceived cleanliness and sterility—key themes in how we relate to food and its presentation.
