MAYAN GLYPHS

2019

A trip to Tikal in northern Guatemala sparked a deep appreciation for ancient Mayan carvings and a desire to preserve them. The documentation process involved creating rubbings of a stele using paper and graphite, which were then brought back to London for replication. These impressions captured subtle details of the relief that would have been difficult to discern through photography alone.

The rubbings were scanned and refined in Photoshop to create digital files compatible with laser-cutting technology. This data enabled the laser cutter to accurately interpret variations in surface depth, reproducing the relief with precision. Through a combination of laser cutting and metal casting, the glyphs were faithfully recreated in bronze at a 1:1 scale.
