A trip to Tikal in northern Guatemala generated a desire to preserve an ancient Mayan carvings. The documentation of the stele was made with paper and graphite and brought back to London in the attempt to replicate these markings. Through a process of laser cutting and metal casting these glyphs were reproduced in bronze at a 1:1 scale. The rubbing’s picked up on details of the relief that would not have been achievable through photography. With some adjustments in Photoshop, the scanned documents were transformed into data which the laser cutter could read. This allowed the machine to cut through different densities of material making a replication of the relief.
